Apple Refreshes The iPod Touch With A8 SoC And New Cameras

Today Apple released a new version of the iPod Touch. The previous model of the iPod Touch was released back in 2012, and over time it has seen a few changes with the addition of a 16GB model without a rear-facing camera, and then the camera being added back to it further down the road. This 2015 model of the iPod Touch is an evolutionary improvement, but still the biggest improvement to the product that we've seen in quite some time.

The new iPod touch has the 64-bit Apple A8 SoC inside, just like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Which improves the performance quite a bit from the Apple A5 on the previous iPod Touch model. The new SoC is also accompanied by 1GB LPDDR3 RAM up from 512MB. It also gets the M8 motion coprocessor for accurate tracking of physical activities. Furthermore, there's a new 8 MP rear camera with f/2.4 along with a improved 1.2 MP front camera with f/2.2 aperture.

Other changes include a new 128GB capacity, and the addition of 802.11ac WiFi connectivity. Apple's listing for Bluetooth 4.1 support also confirms that their Bluetooth software stack has been updated to that version.

The revamped iPod touch surprisingly costs the same - starts at $199 if you're happy with 16GB of storage. If you want 32GB, you'll need to pay $249. For the 64GB model the price is $299 and 128GB iPod touch costs $399. All of these versions are already up for grabs from Apple's online store.

Apple Announces iOS 9 at WWDC

Today Apple has made a number of announcements relating to their three major operating systems. We've seen the announcement of WatchOS 2 for the Apple Watch, OS X El Capitan for Macs, and finally, iOS 9 for Apple's iPhones, iPods and iPads. With the ninth major iteration of their mobile operating system, Apple is bringing some long overdue improvements to features like Siri and Spotlight, improving performance on all devices, and revamping the experience for users on the iPad.

Apple Announces OS X El Capitan

At WWDC Apple announced the next version of their OS X operating system. This next release, presumably version 10.11, is named OS X El Capitan. OS X Yosemite came with a comprehensive redesign which brought it in line with the new design principles that Apple introduced with iOS 7. The focus of El Capitan can be found in its name, which is a rock formation within Yosemite National Park. With Yosemite being the radical revamp, El Capitan focuses on improvements to the user experience and to performance.

iPhone 5c with Touch ID sensor spotted on Apple website

Apple recently introduced its official Lightning dock. On this accessory's page over on the Apple store website, there are a handful of pictures showing the company's various smartphones attached to the dock.

That's where the image you can see on the left shows up. This is a device that looks like the iPhone 5c from two years ago, but it clearly has the Touch ID fingerprint sensor embedded in its Home button - which the iPhone 5c doesn't.

This naturally leads us to wonder whether this is simply a render created by mistake by an Apple employee (who maybe forgot about the lack of Touch ID on the iPhone 5c), or if it's something more.
See, an iPhone 6c has long been rumored over the past few months, and it was said to come later this year with a 4-inch touchscreen just like the 5c before it. The Touch ID fingerprint scanner was featured in the rumors as a given for the new affordable model, by the way.

Yet given how secretive Apple usually likes to be about its future handsets, it's more likely that this is nothing but an error.

Apple Watch receives its first ever software update, filled with performance improvements

Upcoming iPad Pro will feature A9 CPU, Force Touch, and NFC

A new report from Apple Insider citing people familiar with Cupertino’s agenda sheds light on some of the specs of the upcoming iPad Pro. The upcoming full-size slate will allegedly feature next-generation A9 CPU, NFC, Force Touch, and USB-C connector.
The presence of an Apple A9 chip in the 12.9” iPad Pro should hardly catch anyone by surprise. The component will all but certainly be a beefed up version of the CPU that will debut in the iPhone 6 successor.
NFC might allow the iPad Pro to work as a terminal for receiving Apple Pay transactions, as well as for connecting the tablet to a previously rumored, pressure-sensitive Bluetooth stylus. It is highly unlikely that the tablet will be used often for making payments given its size.
USB-C will not be the only iPad Pro port. The slate is also expected to have a Lightning connector as well.
Last week, the alleged measures of the unannounced slate appeared via leaked schematics. Apple iPad Pro will likely debut at some point this fall.

iOS 8 adoption continues to climb, now stands at 81%

Apple is reporting that 81% of all active iOS devices are now using iOS 8, the company's latest mobile operating system which was released back in September last year.
iOS 8 adoption has been somewhat slower than that of its predecessor iOS 7, which, for comparison, was powering around 90% of all active iOS devices the same time last year. However, it is gradually picking up - it stood at 75% last month and 79% a couple of weeks ago.
As for the remaining iOS devices, 17% are still using iOS 7, while 2% are stuck running even older versions.

TAG Heuer Smartwatch will cost around $1400, launch by November

TAG Heuer Smartwatch
Bloomberg is reporting that TAG Heuer’s first smartwatch will be arriving in October-November this year and will cost around $1400. While none of these details are official, they are said to be coming from TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver.

Biver told Bloomberg that TAG Heuer’s smartwatch battery will last about 40 hours, which is slightly more than most smartwatches as they last less than 24 hours. He did not share any other details about the device, but we already know that the TAG Heuer smartwatch runs on Android Wear and will be powered by an Intel chip. The company is expected to officially detail the smartwatch in the coming months.

TAG Heuer had announced the smartwatch in March at the Baselworld 2015 as a part of its collaboration with Google and Intel. It will be the first luxury Android Wear smartwatch when it hits the stores later this year.

Model numbers for "Noble" Note 5 and "Zen" Galaxy S6 uncovered

Two Samsung IMEI numbers have surfaced that point to two new Galaxy models. Their model numbers are SM-G928S and SM-N920F and the rumor mill has decoded them as the "Zen" Galaxy S6 Plus and "Noble" Galaxy Note 5 respectively.
The SM-G928 appears to be a variation on the Galaxy S6 (G920), but it's unclear what will change from the current model. The final letters reveal regional versions, F for Europe, A and V for AT&T and Verizon, S and K for SK Telecom and KT.
The SM-N920F we couldn’t find and its name does coincide with what the next Note should be – the Galaxy Note 4 is the N910. Unfortunately that doesn’t give us much, neither does the "Noble" codename.
The letters indicate a European version, plus one for each carrier except KT.

Samsung beats Apple to regain top smartphone-maker crown in Q1 2015

While Apple became the world's top smartphone vendor in the fourth quarter of 2014, looks like Samsung has recaptured the crown in Q1, 2015.

According to a report from market research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung captured 24% market share in the first quarter of the year, overtaking Apple, which claimed nearly 18%. It's worth mentioning that Samsung had captured 31% market in the year-ago quarter.
In terms of shipment numbers, the South Korean company shipped 83.2 million smartphones worldwide, while the Cupertino-based company shipped 61.2 million units.

"Samsung continued to face challenges in Asia and elsewhere, but its global performance has stabilized sufficiently well this quarter to overtake Apple and recapture first position as the world's largest smartphone vendor by volume," said Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston.

Apple sold more than 61 million iPhones in Q2 2015

Apple announced financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal 2015, which ended on March 28. Thanks to strong iPhone and Mac sales, as well as record App Store performance, the Cupertino giant recorded its best Q2 with net profit of $13.6 billion from $58 billion of revenue.

The results handily trounce the $10.2 billion of profit and $45.6 billion of revenue from the same period a year ago. However, they are don’t quite match the results from the all-time best fiscal Q1 2015 and the 74.5 million iPhones sold (this quarter included the busy holiday shopping season).
Apple sold 61.2 million iPhones during the past quarter, while sales of iPad tablets and Mac computers were 12.6 million and 4.5 million units respectively. The company’s CEO Tim Cook pointed at “a higher rate of people switching to iPhone than we’ve experienced in previous cycles.”

Cupertino’s 40.8% gross margin beat the estimates for the quarter. The same goes for the company’s revenue.

Sales of the Apple iPad on the other hand, came in below expectations. Mac sales grew an annual basis.

Next quarter should be quite interesting for Apple, as it will include sales of the hot new Apple Watch, as well as the brand new 12” Retina Macbook. The company expects to post revenue between $46 billion and $48 billion in the upcoming fiscal Q3.

Samsung announces Galaxy Win Pro mid-ranger

Having gone unannounced until now, the Samsung Galaxy Win Pro has popped up on the Korean manufacturer's China web portal today.

The Win Pro retains the midrange pedigree of its predecessor, the Galaxy Win, but to a lesser degree thanks to its 4.5-inch qHD display. This is a marked step up from the 4.7" WVGA display of the Galaxy Win.The phone is not new or has been improved for good it has about the same specs as former: a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 5MP camera, and optional dual-SIM support. The battery has been bumped up by 100mAh to 2,100 mAh, and while there's no word on internal storage or RAM size, we assume they'll be in the same 8GB/1GB neighborhood as the Win.Also, contrary to what the name may lead you to believe, the Galaxy Win Pro will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
