Samsung Announces The Galaxy S6 Active

Today Samsung and AT&T announced the Galaxy S6 Active, a variant of the Galaxy S6 with a greater focus on durability and ruggedness. Releasing an Active version of their flagship Galaxy device has become a tradition for Samsung since the Galaxy S4, and it looks like this year is no exception. While it differs in its construction and design, I think people will find that its specifications are quite familiar.

Samsung’s rumored Galaxy A-series smartphone ‘A8′ has been spotted in the database of GFXBench. The smartphone is expected to be introduced in the coming months and will join the already available Galaxy A3, A5, and A7 smartphones.

HTC One (M7) Dual SIM and Samsung Galaxy Core Prime gets the Lollipop update

The dual-SIM version of the HTC One (M7) smartphone, which was released in the August of 2013, has started receiving the Android Lollipop update in India. It is, however, not yet known if it's a global or region-specific roll-out.
After applying the update, which is around 675MB in size, the device runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, with software version 7.117.720.6.
The roll-out comes just over a week after HTC revealed that the One Mini as well as the One Mini 2 won't be getting the update. It's also worth mentioning that the regular version of the M7 started receiving Lollipop back in March this year.
Samsung Galaxy Core Prime gets the Lollipop update:
Samsung is continuing its Lollipop expansion over its 2014 smartphones. The next in line to get the sweet firmware update is the Galaxy Core Prime, the SM-G360F model in particular. The first country to get the upgrade is Poland, but we expect other markets to follow suit shortly.
The Galaxy Core Prime update is available over the air and via Kies. It brings Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OS, the latest TouchWiz UX with Material Design and many interface improvements. The Core Prime update also includes updated Samsung default apps and repository, bug and security fixes, connectivity and performance improvements among others.

Samsung Gulf now says no Lollipop for Galaxy Note 8.0

Just a week after it said that the Galaxy Note II won't be getting Lollipop, Samsung Gulf has now revealed that the Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet will also not receive the update. The subsidiary made the revelation in a reply to a query on its Facebook page (see image below).
However, Samsung's decision to not update the Note 8.0 could be region-specific, given that the South Korean company's Spain and Denmark subsidiaries have already confirmed the Android 5.0 update for the Note II. But to be sure, we'll have to wait for other Samsung subsidiaries to reveal their update plans for the Note 8.0.
Meanwhile, Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S4 models have started receiving the Lollipop update.

Updates:Samsung and Dell push out software updates

Samsung has pushed out new update to Samsung Galaxy S6.The OTA has an Android version 5.0.2, which the device already received last month, but now comes with noticeable improvement to the phone's performance.

As some of you might remember, a lot of Galaxy S6 users have been reporting some severe memory issues and drops in performance. Samsung recognized the problem and promised to remedy it in future micro updates. Judging from the improved stability and speed of the unit, we can fairly safely state that the memory leak was handled after the update.
The package itself has a build number of G920FXXU1AODG and weighs precisely 138.32 MB. Its change log is quite vague, so we can't say for sure what improvements and fixes it brings, but, like we said, the Galaxy S6 is now a lot snappier. If you have any more info on the OTA in question and the alleged S6 memory leak, be sure to let us know in the comment section.
Dell pushes out Android 5.0.2 update for Venue 8:
Dell has started pushing out the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update for the Dell Venue 8 7840. You can check if the update is available for download from the Settings app.

Like the KitKat version before it, Lollipop on the Venue 8 seems to be unadulterated and close to stock Android. According to Android Police, it does enable encryption by default, which we have seen in the past causes some drop in performance, but it remains to be seen if that holds true for the Venue 8 as well.If you have the device, check if the update is available.

Galaxy S6 and S6 edge update said to bring RAW photo capture

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge both offer amazing camera quality, which is only natural, seeing how the pair employs very advanced sensors and optics. But, surprisingly enough, they lack RAW capture, which is a must for any photography enthusiast.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE gets Lollipop too

After both the Wi-Fi-only and LTE versions of its bigger sibling, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 got Lollipop updates a while back, now is the time for the LTE-enabled variation of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 to receive the same treat.
Its Wi-Fi-only iteration has been enjoying the taste of Lollipop since last month. But now the rollout for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE seems to be in full swing.
The update is currently rolling out over-the-air in Hong Kong, where it's also available to download and install using Kies, Samsung's desktop app. Now that the ice has been broken, we expect to see the Lollipop release making it to Galaxy Tab S 8.4 units sold elsewhere too in the near future.
By the end of this month, we should see a much wider rollout. If you are among the lucky ones to get the update, after applying it you'll be running Android 5.0.2, and firmware version T705ZHU1BOD3.
It brings with it a new look for Samsung's TouchWiz UI, one that's infused with Google's Material Design principles. You also get a new lock screen, new Recent Apps menu, new notification panel, and an improved multi-window mode, along with updates for built-in apps, bug fixes, and performance enhancements.

Alleged photos of Samsung Z2 with Tizen OS leak out

Purported live photos of an upcoming Samsung Z2 smartphone with Tizen OS made the rounds online. The entry-level handset is expected to debut at some point over the next couple of months.
As you can see above, the upcoming device looks like a blend between Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Grand. Samsung Z2 is all but certain to be offered mostly in emerging markets.
Purported specs of the Samsung Z2 include 32-bit quad-core CPU, a gig of RAM, 2,000mAh battery, and Tizen 3.0 UI. In line with past rumors, the device is said to pack a qHD TFT-LCD display.
A successor of Samsung Z1 should hardly catch anyone by surprise - the affordable smartphone has done quite well since its launch in India and Bangladesh.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 will be announced in June

As most of you surely remember, Samsung has been hard at work on the successors to the premium Galaxy Tab S duo. The Tab S2 will come in two sizes - an 8.0-inch and a 9.7-inch one and will utilize 4:3 aspect ratio screens. Industry sources now hint at a June announcement for both tablets, so, it shouldn't be long now before Samsung's high-end tablet lineup gets the update.

Both sizes of the Tab S2 are expected to come in a Wi-Fi-only, as well as a Wi-Fi + LTE variants, which amounts to a total of four new devices. According to previous rumors, the new tablets will be exceptionally thin, even thinner than the iPad Air 2. The alleged measurements are 237.1 × 168.8 × 5.4 mm for the smaller one and 237.17mm x 169.58mm x 5.4mm for the other. This would not only make the device “razor thin”, but would, effectively crown it the thinnest Samsung tablet to date. They are pretty light as well, at 260 grams and 407 grams respectively.
As far as the alleged specs sheets go, the slates should feature 2,048 x 1,536 pixel screens, just like recent iPads and the Nexus 9. Both devices should also be powered by one of Samsung’s own Exynos chipsets, which has a big.LITTLE CPU configuration, with four Cortex-A57 cores and four Cortex-A53 ones. The maximum clock speed will be 1.9 GHz. The GPU is a hexa-core Mali-T760MP6. RAM and camera, however, seem to be directly borrowed from the current Galaxy Tab S. That is 3GB for RAM and an 8MP camera.

There may be no Lollipop update for the Samsung Galaxy Note II - Testing

The Samsung Galaxy Note II may be denied entry into the Lollipop world if the statement on Samsung Gulf's Facebook page is to be extrapolated to the global availability of the update. Thus, the two-generations-old flagship phablet is likely going to end up stuck on Android 4.4.2 KitKat in most markets.
The news comes as a disappointment after a couple of months ago it was claimed by Samsung's Polish branch than an update for the Note II was planned. It won't be the first time that a Lollipop update has been region-dependent, but the chances are indeed getting slimmer.
However, it shouldn't be a surprise in a world where even one year-old smartphones often end up without the most recent OS version and the Android realm remains heavily fragmented. The flagship status of the phablet fueled hopes that it may be graced with a new firmware, but apparently that's not going to be the case.
Update: Samsung's Spanish division has now published its own statement on the matter on its twitter page. According to it, there is in fact a Lollipop update in the works, but Samsung will only release it if it turns out problem-free. So nothing is final yet and the glimmer of hope remains.

Galaxy S6 Edge 64GB variant to arrive in Malaysia this month

Android 5.1 for S6 and S6 Edge to reportedly bring Guest Mode

The Android 5.1 update for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will also bring along a new Guest Mode feature, according to a Sammobile report.
Guest Mode enables you to set up separate profiles for guests, allowing you to share your device without worrying about your personal stuff, including installed apps, being seen by others. The feature was first introduced for tablets with the Jelly Bean update but arrived on phones with Android Lollipop.
It isn't yet clear when the update will roll out to the devices. Meanwhile, a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge for T-Mobile has been caught getting Android 5.1.1.

Samsung Galaxy J7, J5 Dual SIM pass Bluetooth certification

Samsung plans to expand its youngest series of smartphones - Galaxy J - with two new additions. Earlier we heard that the Galaxy J1 smartphone will be joined by three more J series models - J3, J5, and J7.

While there is no sight of the J3, the other two models - Galaxy J5 (SM-J500F/DS) Dual-SIM and Galaxy J7 (SM-J7008) just got their Bluetooth certification. The Galaxy J5 will also come in a dual-SIM version as per the listing. Besides featuring the new Bluetooth 4.1 specifications , the J5 Dual-SIM will feature 5” HD LCD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 SoC, 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB expandable storage. Packing 2,600 mAh battery, the J5 will be 8.5mm thick and 149grams heavy.
On the other hand, the Galaxy J7 bearing Bluetooth 4.1 will feature 5.5” HD LCD display with 1.5GB RAM but will house an octa-core (Cortex A53)  Marvel PXA1936 SoC and offer storage between 1GB and 2GB RAM. Samsung will add a 3,000 mAh battery inside this 7.9mm thick phone and make it heavier at 170 grams.
The J5 and J7 will feature a 13MP rear shooters and 5MP front cameras to take selfies. Samsung will include the Android 5.1 Lollipop based TouchWiz UI on top of it. With this Bluetooth certification, both phones inch closer to official launch.

Samsung's new custom CPU cores 45% faster than A57

Samsung has undoubtedly secured its top-dog position in terms of current gen mobile SoC performance. The latest Exynos 7420, powering the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge has proven itself more capable than anything Qualcomm or Mediatek currently have to offer. But, in today's fast-paced mobile realm tides can shift almost instantly and Samsung doesn't intend to let its competition catch up.
A few weeks ago, we heard a rumor, that the Korean giant is currently hard at work on a custom CPU core design of its own. This is, actually the next logical step in evolving the company's own Exynos chipset family, as, even though, the Exynos 7420 is manufactured with proprietary Samsung technology, it is still based on standard Cortex A57 and A53 cores.

The new silicon, codenamed Mongoose, is said to employ an entirely different architecture altogether and according to some preliminary benchmarks and estimates, in churns out 45% better single-core performance than the Exynos 7420. As far as we currently know, the 64-bit Mongoose chips should cover an ARMv8 instruction set and offer clock speeds of up to 2.3 GHz. There is, however, a lot more that contributes to a mobile chip's performance and proper heat management is another key factor. Samsung has led us to believe that Mongoose will be build using 14nm FinFET technology, just like the current Exynos 7420.
In other words, Samsung, needs to really implement things right, or else it might risk causing another overheating fiasco, like the one still plaguing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. Another interesting rumor concerning the upcoming chips is that Exynos M1, which will supposedly be the first Mongoose chip, might employ a Heterogeneous System Architecture. This would be an exciting step forward for mobile tech, as the concept of employing GPU processors for genera-purpose calculations has really caught on lately. Furthermore, Samsung is, in fact, part of the HAS Foundation, along with other major industry names, like AMD, ARM, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, which makes the leap to heterogeneous computing all that more plausible.

As far as availability goes, industry source estimate that the first Mongoose chips might enter into mass production in 9 to 12 months. If Samsung sticks to its standard release schedule, this could mean that the company's next flagship device, presumably the Galaxy S7, will be the first to use the novice architecture.

Lollipop update rolling out for Samsung Galaxy Alpha

Looks like Samsung has started rolling out the Android Lollipop update for the Galaxy Alpha (SM-G850)smartphone. According to a report from Sammobile, the device has started getting Android 5.0.2 in South Korea, where the update is available OTA (over-the-air) as well as through the company's Kies software utility.
For those who aren't in the know, the Android 5.0.2 update mostly brings performance and stability-related improvements and better battery life. It is expected that the update will roll out soon in other markets as well.
The news comes just a few days after the South Korean company started updating the Galaxy A3 with Android Lollipop.

Galaxy S4 mini won't get Android Lollipop update

UK carrier, Three has revealed that Samsung's Galaxy S4 mini will not be getting the Android Lollipop update. The revelation was made by the carrier in response to a user's question on Twitter.
The reason, according to the carrier is the memory limitation on the S4 mini. When pressed further,Three also revealed they've received an official confirmation for the same from Samsung.
For those who aren't aware, released back in 2013, Galaxy S4 mini is a more compact, but also less capable variant of that year's Samsung flagship - Galaxy S4.
