Sharp unveils Aquos Crystal 2 with a bigger, bezel-less display

Sharp is back with a successor to the bezel-less Aquos Crystal mid-ranger from last year. The Sharp Aquos Crystal 2 boosts the screen size to 5.2", adds basic waterproofing and mobile wallet support. The phone will launch on Softbank in Japan in mid-July, it's not clear when it will hop over to the US.

The Aquos Crystal 2 brings a bigger display (S-PureLED), but keeps the resolution at 720p. The phone has gotten a bit bigger – 136 x 71 x 11mm, 154g – since Sharp couldn’t really make the screen bigger at the expense of the bezel as there isn’t much bezel to speak of.
This means things like the selfie camera (2.1MP in this case) have to be moved below the screen. The main camera is still and 8MP shooter, but the Crystal 2 comes with more RAM (2GB) and more storage (16GB). It's powered by the same Snapdragon 400 MSM8926 chipset though.

The phone has some waterproofing, enough to survive splashes but not submersion. An interesting addition is Grip Magic, a sensor on the side of the device that detect touches.
Connectivity includes LTE, HD Voice, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC, a mobile wallet system and 1-seg mobile TV. Despite the increase in size the battery capacity hasn’t budged, it's still at 2,030mAh. However, Sharp claims the new display panel is more power efficient while also being brighter.

Leaked Meizu MX5 renders show bezelless display

The Meizu MX5 is going to get official at a special event on June 30, according to some rumors from last week. It will get a metal construction, unlike all of its predecessors, and it's also going to come with a fingerprint sensor embedded in its Home button.
Then again, perhaps the most anticipated detail about this smartphone is what it will look like, since so far we haven't seen it in any leaks. Well, today a couple of renders have surfaced in China claiming to accurately portray Meizu's next flagship offering.

As you can see from these images (click on the thumbnails for the full-size versions), the MX5 will be yet another handset to employ some kind of 'bezelless' tech for its screen. The display panel has virtually no lateral bezels, and this is something that's becoming quite a trend in China. The MX5 will be in select company in this respect - with the ZTE Nubia Z9, Oppo R7 Plus, and perhaps also the Vivo X5Pro.

Past mumblings mentioned that the Meizu MX5 would be powered by MediaTek's MT6795 SoC, which boasts an octa-core CPU that can be clocked at up to 2.2 GHz.
With regard to these renders, you shouldn't forget that they're still unconfirmed (even by other leaks), so it's entirely possible that they're not in fact showing us the next Meizu device. As we get closer to its unveiling date, things will surely get more clear.

ZTE Nubia Z9 is official with bezelless display

Just as rumored, the ZTE Nubia Z9 is officially here. The handset was made official today in Beijing and, from the looks of it, it definitely lives up to expectations.
The definitive feature we were all hoping and waiting for is very much present. The ZTE Nubia Z9 features a 1080p, 5.2-inch 2.5D panel, surrounded by a very thin reflective bezel, which creates the illusion of an edge-to-edge screen. The bezel in question is only 0.8 mm and uses clever optics to reflect the screen image. This is very similar to what we expected to see an upcoming Oppo handset, but the Nubia Z9 is a true ambassador of the new technology and visual style.

Oppo officially confirms metal unibody and May 20 launch for R7

A lot has been said about Oppo's upcoming handset - the R7. For quite a long time we were all convinced that the phone will be the first to feature a 'bezelless' screen design based on the company's recent patent. Since then, however, Oppo has cleared up a lot of myths around the smartphone and it seems the R7 won't come with the new edge-to-edge technology we were hoping for.

The screen might not bring along the anticipated "coolness factor" in the R7, but the device will still have a lot to offer. For one, a new teaser once again proves that the prone will come with a metal unibody as rumored.
Also, an event invitation has been making the rounds online, so it is safe to assume that the Oppo R7 will be unveiled at the said venue on May 20. As far as we currently know, the phone will boast a pretty thin profile (under 5mm) and 4.7-inch screen, the Oppo R7 fits a 2,000 mAh battery. Its display resolution is set to be 1080p. It is also said to feature a 20.7 MP rear camera, and should be powered by MediaTek's 64-bit MT6795 chipset coming with an octa-core processor.

As for the aforementioned novice 'bezelless' design, not all hope is lost yet. Judging by the large number of alleged photos and even a leaked video, demonstrating the interesting tech, such a phone might exist and be headed to consumer markets as well, just under a different name.
