Samsung has announced their rollout of 3rd generation V-NAND technology by introducing new SSDs in different form factors. The new technology will allow more capacity in SSDs at the same price as todays while also delivering more performance efficiently. Mass production of the 3rd Gen V-NAND technology is said to start in early 2016.
The new 3rd Gen NAND features a 48-layer design. For those who don't know about V-NAND technology, it is essentially layers of die/chip stacked so that the whole chip is much more dense than normal planar chips. It essentially leads to faster and higher capacity drives and lower power consumption.
The SSD announced is from 950 PRO lineup in the PCIe form-factor is based NVMe protocol and will be available in only 256GB and 512GB capacities. The highlight of the drive is the performance with Read Speeds rated at 2,500MB/s and write speeds of 1,500MB/s which is insane. (if you don't know, normal Hard Drives top out at around 200MB/s reads). The 256GB variant will be priced at $200 and 512GB variant at $350.
Samsung announced that they will be doubling the capacity in most of their SSDs in the market by 2016 for example a 4TB 850 PRO will unveiled in 2016. The SSD market is mostly controlled by Samsung because of it's fast and energy efficient chips.
